On compliments, charms and crankiness

At work today, the first ever fairly accurate case of 'Hey, you look like that white actress/musician/famous person' ever happened, with one of my cute (but identical) university girl students went: "I watched that movie, you know, About Time? You look like the girl from there."

Aww, cute but identical university student, you sure know how to charm my socks off.

I'll take a Rachel McAdams compliment any day over a Taylor Swift one. Plus, that hair is super cute. Maybe I should cut my bangs shorter?

On nervous new people and Adventure Time

Why is this not my hair? Stupid work dress codes.
Pony came over today with all her hair chopped off and a really cool purple colour. It looked pretty sweet, and I was instantly jealous that I couldn't dye my hair funky colours as well. I'm so sick of my hair, but since I'm letting it grow out I don't want to touch it. I kinda wanted to go by Pony's apartment, take her hair and glue it to my head though. I miss fun hair. Being an adult with adult hair is far less fun than people make it out to be.

On hair envy and learning Mongolian

We don't keep notepads to write on at the restaurant. Instead, we use notes made from scrap paper. I love writing orders on the back of failed resumes. It makes me feel like I'm writing on the hides of my vanquished enemies.

On hair dreams

I don't know if it's from all the manga I've been reading lately, or from seeing gifs from New Girl (or my slightly embarrassing obsession with Zooey Deschanel in general), or not being completely happy with my new haircut, but I've been wishing I had long hair for the past week. It goes from everything from a cute bob to wishing I had Sawako from Kimi ni Todoke's long, straight hair with bangs. I've always been jealous of her hair but I haven't had the patience for long hair since my mom made me keep it long when I was a kid. Chopped it all off at age ten and haven't had it all that much further past my shoulders since.

I mean, just look at all of that adorable!

On stereotypes and handling them

I'm kinda surprised at how much I enjoy work. When I started looking for work, thinking about working in the restaurant business, I figured it'd be like the other place I worked at, where I was bored out of my mind and hated my job. Little did I know when I started working where I work now that the colleagues would all be the sweetest, the customers (mostly) really friendly, and the tippers generous. I've been treated so well since I started that I've really come to have fun at work, and the six hours daily that I work fly by.

On hair woes

I've been having some serious hair issues lately, both due to being broke and being totally unable to make my mind up. I'm at a loss about everything - colour, style, length... and whenever I think I've made my mind up, I end up changing it again the next day. Everyone tells me different things. Guy friends and Hemingway think I should let it grow longer. Girl friends think I should cut it short again (which is funny, since short hair apparently made me super-hot to every single lesbian I know). When I mentioned I was thinking of getting a bob haircut to my dad, he scoffed and went "That hairstyle's way too boring to suit you", following up by telling me how great the short hair was and how I looked "like a presenter on TV", which is the cutest dated compliment I've ever received. Mom voted for slightly outdated hair options but ended up going "Well, you have similar features, so get whatever looks good on her" when I showed her pictures of Agyness Deyn's short hair.

Because who doesn't want to look that awesome?
Agyness Deyn would look good in anything though, but thanks for the compliment, mom!

On Greece and family vacations

Pony, G and I decided to go on a family vacation, possibly the only one we'll have time for before Japan happens. My parents own a house in a tiny mountain village, and after the pretty shitty spring we'd all had, a relaxing vacation was what we needed. The place is a nice hideaway from the world, like you have your home problems at home and you can just peacefully exist among the beautiful fields and pine groves. Sitting in the sun eating watermelon, there's not much I miss, apart from Hemingway that is.

Home sweet home.

On knits and being a 60's time traveler

Real men knit.
I've started knitting again. I'm aware that a lot of my hobbies are positively granny-esque, and knitting's definitely on the top of that list, but it's fun and it gives me the right amount of analytical thinking what with all the counting involved when it comes to complex patterns. I read somewhere that knitting is relaxing and stress reducing in the same way as yoga is, and I'm sure that can be true. This pattern I'm working on at the moment is pretty complex and a little bit anger-invoking though, so I don't know. I've missed knitting though, I haven't had time to do it for a long time. I used to do it all the time and everywhere - on lectures, on the train, in cafés, and people, especially old people, would come up and talk to me or comment on it. I remember a really old man telling me with quite a bit of pride in his voice how he used to knit when he was young, and how proud he was to wear the things he'd made. While my social awkwardness leaves these conversations not running very smoothly, I still like hearing them, and I like people complimenting me or marveling about what I'm doing, as if it were some amazingly complex thing. It's not really, it's math - patterns and systems and numbers, only you're rewarded with something warm and cool-looking when you're done.

On being blessed by the k-pop gods

So I was going to write about something different today, but then it came to my attention that G-Dragon has released a new song (and video), and what kind of crazed fan girl would I be if I didn't use this space to gush all over it?

"What's up with his hair?" Pony and I started off by wondering.

On having a hairdresser with an agenda of his own

I wonder if the relationship I have with my hairdresser is the same kind of relationship religious people have with god. You come in with an idea of what you want him to do, and you end up with whatever he feels like giving you today. Justin works in mysterious ways. He'll lure you in with a friendly "Hey blondie, what's up?", ask what you want and proceed to give you... something completely different.
